SMS Donates More Than 2,900 Socks to Help Local Homeless SheltersStruthers Middle School students in Amber Bonilla’s Language Arts - Resource Room decided to once again join the #Socktober campaign by hosting a district wide sock drive. As a result, the district collected 2,900 new pairs of socks to donate to the Dorothy Day House of Youngstown and the Beatitude House in only two weeks.

#Socktober is a campaign, started by SoulPancake and Kid President, that shows even the smallest act of kindness, like donating a pair of socks, can make a big difference in the lives of homeless people in our neighborhoods. Bonilla’s students came across a Socktober video by Kid President and wanted to lend a helping hand by being part of the movement. From there the sock drive took flight and has continued to grow over the past two years.

“Last year, our school collected and donated just over 1,000 pairs of socks,” said Bonilla. “This year we doubled our goal and hoped to collect 2,000 brand new socks to donate to homeless shelters within the our community.”

Bonilla and her students want to thank all the teachers and students at Struthers who participated in #Socktober. “Everyone went above and beyond to help us exceed our goal and make this community outreach project a huge success,” she said. “I am extremely proud of my students and all their hard work.”

The classroom from each building that donated the most socks will win a pizza party. This year’s inspiration stemmed from their discussion on Wonder by R.J. Palacio.
