Former Senator Serves as Guest Speaker at Struthers Veteran’s Day Ceremony

On Friday, November 11 at 11:00 a.m., a Veteran’s Day Ceremony will be held at the Struthers Veteran's Memorial, located at the corner of Morrison and Euclid Ave. in Struthers. Guest speaker at the ceremony will be Former Senator Harry Meshel. The Struthers High Band will also be participating in the service. The public is invited to attend this ceremony.

Harry Meshel, a Mahoning Valley native, served as a full-time legislator since first being elected to the Ohio Senate in 1971. He served as senator for the 33rd District until 1990. During his time as senator, he succeeded in bringing a substantial commitment of state projects and funding to provide employment opportunities and improve the quality of life to citizens of the Mahoning Valley. He was also instrumental in establishing the very first State Department Office branch, which is located in the Mahoning Valley.

Before his work as a state senator, Meshel was a servicemen with the United States Naval Construction Battalion (Seabees) from 1943-1946. He spent two years overseas in New Guinea and the Philippines and was honorably discharged with a rank of CM3-C. Meshel is the recipient of two Battle Stars (bronze) and a member of the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame.

Meshel has been awarded, recognized or honored by various organizations more than 110 times for his outstanding public service and accomplishments. He also has a dozen facilities named in his honor, including Meshel Hall at Youngstown State University and Harry Meshel Hall for Integrated Health Professions Education at the Northeast Ohio College of Medicine.
