Struthers City School District

Our Community

Struthers is a small, diverse city located in Mahoning County with just over 10,000 residents. It encompasses 3.74 square miles and is located on the Mahoning River. Struthers has three school buildings: elementary, middle and high school.

The community's early history centers on Yellow Creek where the cradle of steel began with the building of the Hopewell Furnace. This furnace was built in 1803 by Daniel Eaton and is mentioned in the first line of the 1995 Bruce Springsteen song, "Youngstown."

District Community Partnerships

The Struthers City School District partners with the Juvenile Justice System for the Early Warning System that focuses on identifying at-risk students for attendance, behavior and curriculum. The district also partners with many community organizations to identify and serve social and emotional needs of students including PsyCare, Alta, and United Way of the Mahoning Valley.

Struthers City Schools and the Mahoning County Educational Service Center are helping ensure students are college and career ready with the implementation of the Mahoning Valley Prepared for Success (MVPS) project. This project is a community-level, shared service approach project focused on preparing students for the increasingly competitive 21st century global economy by helping schools meet college and career readiness criteria on the state report card. The MVPS program has embedded college and career counselors into SHS to focus on graduation and early college planning.

Struthers Elementary School

The elementary school consists of grades K-4, with more than 700 students. The curriculum focus is embedded in guided reading (Literacy Collaborative/ReadyGen), conceptual math (Bridges), Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI), Reading Recovery and various other interventions. In collaboration with ASSET-STEM, our teachers implement hands-on STEM experiences throughout the year.

The elementary school prides itself on a strong, positive behavioral intervention system (PBIS) to ensure the "whole" child development (emotional, behavioral and academics). The elementary partners with various resources: Struthers Elementary PTO works collaboratively with the building providing many different resources and experiences to support the student elementary experience, Making Kids Counts supports our "Backpack" program supporting our students beyond the classroom, and Akron Children's and OSU Outreach Programs have adopted our school for student health and wellness support.

Finally, the elementary provides various Pre-Kindergarten programs, partnering with the Mahoning County Educational Service Center and United Way of Mahoning County for Success by Six.

Struthers Middle School

In order to better assist our young adolescents, our school program has been designed around a middle school concept that recognizes the unique intellectual, physical, emotional and social needs of our developing learners. This is a time of great change and although these changes are exciting, they can also be challenging and require additional support in order to make these years a meaningful experience.

The middle school students experience 90 minutes of instruction in English language arts and math, while learning science, social studies, art, music and physical education throughout the remainder of the school day. Other innovative programs include Entrepreneurship, Robotics, and STEM, where students start working with 3D printers as early as 5th grade. There is a daily advisory period following the middle school concept that involves intervention, enrichment, and positive actions curriculum.

Students are also able to participate in extra-curricular activities including athletics, FCA, PANDA, Book Club, Pep Club, and more. In addition, Struthers Middle School won the 2016 Eastern Ohio Partnership Excellence Award.

Struthers High School

Struthers High School offers a well-rounded academics and extra-curricular program that includes: 7 college credit plus and 5 AP courses, robotics and entrepreneurship classes, Drama Club, French Club, Pep Club, Art Squad, Mock Trial, and more. The SHS Mock Trail teams have advanced to the regional and state competitions over the past three years. The Drama Club presents a fall and spring production each school year. The high school has a partnership with radio station WKTL as part of the digital media curriculum. This year, the students will be involved in the broadcasting of various sporting events. The high school also has successful show choir and band programs that travel across the country for performances, including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Disney World in Orlando, FL.

The high school has 17 successful athletics teams. The high school consistently awards more than $1 million in scholarships each year. Struthers High School has won the National Blue Ribbon, a School of Promise by the state board of education and has been recognized by US News and World Report as a Bronze and Silver Medal School.
