2015 Struthers Superintendent Message

Dear Struthers Community,

A big “HELLO” from the Struthers City School District!  It is an honor and privilege to serve as superintendent of the Struthers City School District. In our district, we take pride in our work ethic, our diversity, our excellent quality of life, and the success of our excelling school district. We are focused on improving academic success for all students, and we are committed to preparing them for achievement beyond graduation. We pride ourselves on bringing out the best in each and every student and recognize that strong schools are the foundation of a strong Struthers community because our community and citizens are the backbone of this school district. We appreciate you and promise to give our best efforts in preparing our children as the next generation of leaders.

Struthers City Schools continue to work hard by maintaining a safe and nurturing environment for all of our students and staff. We continue the process of preparing and practicing our safety and crises drills. We believe that practice prepares our students and staff for possible security issues that may occur at any time during a school day. This year we trained our staff to identify students that may be considered “at risk.” We are able to give these students the help they need before it may be too late. Additionally, we held our 2nd Annual Safety Fair. This event provided the community with many learning opportunities from fire safety to weapons awareness. These programs were a huge success for our staff, students and community.

Our Board of Education and Administrative Team have worked diligently to set Struthers City Schools on a path that ensures we continue to perform as a high achieving district in the future. Our students are making more progress than most of their peers throughout the state. In fact, Youngstown State University and Dr. Karen Larwin, reported that our district is one of the highest trending districts in the area in academics, along with a number of other areas. We are proud that our state-of-the-art approach to tailor and distinguish education has earned us many commendations. As a district, we work hard to provide many occasions beyond the classroom in which our students can shine. These include extracurricular activities such as athletics, fine and performing arts, and various other student clubs. These activities, joined with our strong academic curriculum, allow us to encourage students to think critically, act ethically, and help others.

Our Board of Education and Administration are continuing our efforts to reaching out and connect with the Struthers community. This year we have held a holiday turkey dinner for senior citizens, an elementary fun night at our high school, a fall cookout for senior citizens, and several student celebrations held before monthly board meetings. Our proudest moment this year was awarding community veterans with a High School diploma. These residents left school to serve our country and we embraced the opportunity to honor them. We love our community and appreciate your support!

As your superintendent of schools, I am very proud to say that Struthers City Schools are once again a financially stable school district. We spend our money wisely! Your tax dollars have been protected so they can support academics and student growth. We appreciate the community’s support and continue to operate using current tax revenue only. In short, we don’t anticipate any new levies in the future. We only need to maintain and renew current levies and funding sources. We appreciate your continued support of our students and programs.

On behalf of the entire board and staff at Struthers, I sincerely thank you for the opportunity to serve all of you and our wonderful students. Go Wildcats!

Sincerely,

Joseph S. Nohra Jr.

Superintendent

It's all about learning

We at Struthers Elementary know that learning occurs through personal awareness. It’s a process of inquiry and is most effective when people collaborate (students and adults). Thus, learning is a social and personal process. Learning is at its best when we take charge of our own education. Learning is maximized when connections are made to our own experiences. Finally, learning is a reflective practice. We must evaluate our interest in learning.Struthers… Read More
