Struthers Schools to place safety buckets in each classroom

The Struthers City School District hopes its latest effort to protect its students will be more than just a drop in the bucket. The school's security team assembled safety buckets that will soon be placed in each classroom in the case of an emergency.

"Far too often folks think of crisis as a violent crisis, but there is also, you have weather related crisis and gas leaks and other events where kids might be stuck in the classroom for a long time," said Struthers City School District Superintendent Joseph Nohra.

Inspired by other districts, the Struthers City School's safety committee began looking at adding these buckets to the classrooms about a year ago. The group wanted its staff and students to have access to certain items throughout the day. Partnering with the Home Depot in Boardman, the district's idea came to fruition Thursday.

"We have researched it. We have looked into the different items that we could put in the bucket and I think it is just an added extra effort that our district is taking to protect our students and staff," said former school board member Sheri Noble.

Packed into the buckets are items such as a hammer, toilet paper, water bottles, rope, first-aid supplies, wasp spray and glucose tablets for students who have diabetes.

"Instead of having to run to the office or to the bathroom or the first aid kid for the district or for the school, they are able to have it right in their classroom," said Nohra.Struthers Schools to place safety buckets in each classroom.
